Looking east one can see Old Town Alexandria, the Potomac River and Maryland. Just below the front lawn of the Memorial is the Railroad Station, where as seen in the historic print collection many of the materials used to build this great edifice were delivered.

To the north of the Memorial, Crystal City and Washington DC are visible. You can see the United States Capital the Washington Monument along with a host of other interesting sites.

Looking south from the Memorial is the view towards George Washington’s Mt. Vernon. The train yard had been replaced with new buildings such as the Federal District Court House, retail and residential buildings.

Looking west, directly behind the Memorial in the field, one can see the remains of Fort Ellsworth. Several points of the fort are still visible in the partial form of a diamond pattern of the earth. The name, Shuters Hill, sometimes called Shooters Hill dates back to the 1740’s and many stories surround its name. In the lower right corner of the image you can see the site of the Alexandria Archaeology Dig in progress for many years. Many interesting artifacts have been unearthed in this location.
